An earlier version of this page told you flatly that Bowman printed no basketball set in 2003-04, that its only vintage basketball release was 1948, and that the brand did not return to basketball until the college-focused Bowman University line. Two of those three supporting claims are wrong, so the conclusion they propped up has to come down with them. Here is the corrected picture, split into what we sourced and what we could not.

What we can source:

• Bowman is a Topps brand. Topps “bought out Bowman in 1956”, and “In 1989, the Bowman brand name was resurrected by Topps to use on some of its subsidiary sports card sets.”
• Bowman released “its first basketball cards set” in 1948.
• Bowman did not stop at 1948. “2008-09 Bowman Basketball was the brand’s last licensed NBA release” before it returned with 2025-26 Bowman Basketball (released 22 April 2026), where LeBron is base card #121. That means Bowman was an active licensed NBA brand through the 2000s — the decade containing LeBron’s rookie year.

What we could not source, and are therefore not asserting: whether Bowman printed a 2003-04 basketball set, and whether LeBron appears on it. No checklist database we can reach covers 2003-04 — checklistinsider indexes NBA products from 2023-24 onward, and the rest block us. A card we cannot find is not a card that was never printed, and we are not going to dress a gap in our sourcing up as a fact about the hobby.

What to actually do. The chrome-and-Refractor LeBron rookie the great majority of these searches are aiming at is the 2003-04 Topps Chrome rookie and its Refractor parallels — start there. If you are looking specifically at something sold as a Bowman LeBron rookie, ask for a photo of the card back and the copyright line before you pay, and prefer a graded copy so the slab identifies the set for you.
