LeBron James was drafted #1 overall in 2003 by the Cleveland Cavaliers straight out of St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. Across stops with the Cavaliers, Miami Heat, back to Cleveland, and the Los Angeles Lakers, he has won four championships, four Finals MVPs, four regular-season MVPs, and become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader — one of the most collected athletes in the entire hobby.
Source: Wikipedia’s LeBron James entry — “the Cleveland Cavaliers selected James as the first overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft” out of St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in Akron; “James became the first Cavalier to receive the NBA Rookie of the Year Award” after the 2003-04 season; four NBA championships (2012 and 2013 with Miami, 2016 with Cleveland, 2020 with the Lakers); four MVP awards (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013); and “On February 7, James passed Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.”
His career, franchise by franchise
Every LeBron collection eventually maps to which team he was wearing when the card was printed. Four distinct stops, each its own collecting cut:
- Cleveland Cavaliers, first stint (2003-2010) — the rookie era. Named Rookie of the Year in his first season and led the Cavaliers to their first-ever NBA Finals appearance in 2007 (swept by San Antonio). Every LeBron rookie card is a Cavaliers card — see the Cleveland Cavaliers page and the rookie card checklist.
- Miami Heat (2010-2014) — formed a “Big Three” with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh after the free-agency move known as “The Decision.” Reached four straight Finals with Miami, losing in 2011 before winning back-to-back titles in 2012 (over Oklahoma City) and 2013 (a seven-game series over San Antonio), earning Finals MVP both times.
- Cleveland Cavaliers, second stint (2014-2018) — returned home as a free agent in 2014. Delivered Cleveland’s first NBA championship in 2016, erasing a 3-1 Finals deficit against a 73-win Golden State Warriors team — still the title most closely tied to his legacy.
- Los Angeles Lakers (2018-present) — signed as a free agent in 2018. Won a fourth championship and fourth Finals MVP in the 2020 NBA bubble, then passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer on February 7, 2023. See the full Los Angeles Lakers era page, including the #23-to-#6-and-back jersey change.
For the full brand-by-brand collecting timeline — which manufacturers made his cards in each of these eras, from 2003-04 through the modern Panini years — see LeBron James cards year-by-year.
What to collect from each era
- 2003-04 rookies — the foundation of any LeBron collection, across Topps Chrome, Upper Deck, Fleer, SP Authentic and the Exquisite RPA. All Cavaliers cards.
- Rookie parallels & refractors — Topps Chrome Refractors and the numbered rookie inserts that anchor the early-career chase.
- Modern Panini — Prizm parallels, National Treasures, Flawless, and other premium-era products with patch cards, Logoman 1/1s and numbered parallels (unsigned — his autograph rights sit with Upper Deck).
- Championship-era cards — his four title runs (Heat 2012 & 2013, Cavaliers 2016, Lakers 2020), each with Finals MVP and commemorative inserts.
- The Bronny cards — in 2024, the Lakers drafted LeBron’s son Bronny James, making the two the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game. Cards featuring both are a real, growing collector cut in modern Lakers-era products.
Note that no LeBron rookie card is a Lakers card — his rookies are all Cleveland Cavaliers cards from his first stint. LeBron was born in 1984 and remains active, still adding to his résumé; because his career is ongoing, demand across every era of his cardboard has stayed remarkably strong.
