Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers are where LeBron James’s career began — and, unusually, where it paused and picked back up again. Drafted #1 overall in 2003 out of nearby Akron, Ohio, he played two separate stints in wine and gold: the 2003-04 rookie run through 2010, and a 2014-18 return that delivered the franchise’s only NBA championship. Both eras are collected, and they don’t look alike on cardboard.

Two eras, not one

LeBron’s first Cavs stint ran 2003 to 2010 — seven seasons that began with his 2003-04 rookie class and NBA Rookie of the Year award. In the summer of 2010 he left as a free agent to join the Miami Heat, where he won two championships before announcing his return to Cleveland in a Sports Illustrated essay in 2014. The second stint ran 2014 to 2018, ending when he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2018.

The 2016 championship

The return stint’s defining moment: down 3-1 in the 2016 Finals to a 73-win Golden State Warriors team, the Cavaliers won three straight to become the first team ever to overcome a 3-1 Finals deficit. It was Cleveland’s first major professional sports championship since 1964, and LeBron was named Finals MVP. Card companies covered the run with championship and Finals-MVP commemorative inserts across the return-era Panini sets — a genuinely distinct lane from the rookie-era chase.
